Our text is Acts 10:17-43.
Children’s Message: Pastor Chad Sadorf has been including a series of Children’s Messages. In this message series we are going to look at the Fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23. Today’s message is provided as a video; this link appears just after the Gloria Patri in the service (where it would normally occur in our church service). Click on these links for printable activity pages and a children’s bulletin to accompany this message: Fruit of the Spirit coloring page, Love coloring page, and Children’s Bulletin.
Service for Family Worship:
Call to Worship: Psalm 27:1-6
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. 3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident. 4 One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. 5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. 6 And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord. (ESV)
Almighty God, as we consider your majesty we bow before you, because you are infinitely worthy of our worship and our praise.
And as we try to proclaim your worth, we become keenly aware that our words are so inadequate, and our minds are so limited that we are helpless unless you come to our aid.
So as we join our hearts and minds and present ourselves to you, would you enable us by Holy Spirit to worship you in spirit and in truth.
Father, you have created us for your own glory and part of your will for us is that we also take delight in you.
Thank you so much for giving us hearts that want to take delight in you and to dwell in your presence. Because only there can we find true peace, joy, contentment, and rest for our weary souls.
Father, we ask you today to meet us at the point of our needs as you define them. And that you would continue to conform us to the image of your son to your honor and glory alone. Amen.
Corporate Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:43-48
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (ESV)
Almighty God, Creator and Redeemer, holy beyond all comprehension, perfect in all your attributes and character, forgive our sins. Forgive the sins that we remember, and the sins we have forgotten. Forgive our many failures in the face of temptation, and those times when we have been stubborn in the face of correction. Forgive the times we have been proud of our own achievements and those when we have failed to boast in your works. Forgive the harsh judgments we have made of others, and the leniency we have shown ourselves. Forgive the lies we have told to others, and the truths we have avoided. Forgive us the pain we have caused others and the indulgence we have shown ourselves. Gracious Father, have mercy on us, restore the joy of our salvation, and transform us increasingly into the image of your Son. For it is in his name we pray.
Assurance of Pardon: : 2 Corinthians 5:21
21 For our sake he [God] made him [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (ESV)
This is a wonderful promise we have in the gospel.
Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell1. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic2 church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
1Christ was under the power of death for a time; he incurred the full penalty for the sins of God’s people.
2Catholic is defined as God’s universal church.

Offertory: Matthew 6:19-21
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

II. God freely justifies us in the gospel
Benediction (Click here to hear this week’s benediction)
Questions for Further Discussion
1. List and discuss the essential elements of the apostolic gospel. (What must be said in order to communicate the biblical gospel?)
2. How are Jesus’ appearances described – 10:41? (How were witnesses chosen? What happened when he appeared? Why did God choose these people as witnesses? Cf. verses 39, 42.)
3. What responsibility was then given to certain of these witnesses – 10:42? To what must they testify?
Fruit of the Spirit: Love
Last week we ended our study of the I AM sayings of Jesus in John 15. We learned that Jesus is The True Vine, We are the branches and we are to bear much fruit. The fruit that Jesus was talking about was not fruit from the grocery store but spiritual fruit.
Galatians 5:22-23 – “Fruit of the Spirit”
Spiritual fruit is not fruit you eat, so what is it – let’s talk about that!
Jesus told us that we have to stay connected to him – to love him, obey him, follow him…He told us that if we did that – we would bear much fruit, good fruit
In this message series we are going to look at the Fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” It is Holy Spirit who produces this fruit in us and todays’ message is about the first fruit – love.
